Tips to Preventing Fraud during Card-Not-Present (CNP) Transactions

by Vince | Jan 16, 2014 | Blog

There are three key steps that you, as a merchant, should take to prevent fraud during a card-not-present (CNP) transaction. And as a company, we chose Fully-Verified to be our provider for services that verify each transaction we carry out is 100% secure. These are basic tips that the best American Express card provider has offered up and want all merchants to be aware of, so we are passing along this valuable information!

  1. Get customers permission to run card.

  2. Always thoroughly check card information by asking the customer for the expiration date, and card security code (CSC).

  3. Use fraud prevention tools such as Address Verification Service (AVS) or Card Verification Value 2 (CVV2).

Also, always remain alert to red flags that could point to fraudulent activity, such as:

  • Multiple cards being utilized but shipping is to the same address
  • Multiple transactions on one card in a short period of time
  • A customer who places a very large order of the same item
  • A customer who is willing to pay a large sum of money for rush delivery
  • An order that consists of solely high priced items
  • Shipping requested to an international address

If you are still uncertain that the transaction is valid, don’t hesitate to ask for additional information or even confirm the order transaction by sending a letter or invoice to the customer’s billing address, rather than to the shipping address.

Following these tips can greatly reduce your chances of fraud during CNP transactions. Feel free to contact us at Easy Pay Direct with further questions, 800.805.4949.
