It has been said that solid relationships are built on trust, communication, respect, and commitment. Business partnerships are no different. At their essence, they are relationships like any other. Businesses don’t work with other businesses—people engage with people.

Building Strong Partnerships

In order for solid business relationships to be built, the cornerstones of any relationship must be present. Trust is key. One must understand the genesis of their partner organizations. Who began them and why? What has their trajectory looked like so far? Where do they sit in their industry, and what is their reputation?

Getting an understanding of how an organization has developed and grown over time is important. It’s also important to know the people. Make an effort—what are their KPIs? What contributes to their success? What role do partnerships play in their growth plan? How can your contributions drive their growth? If you are asking these questions, they should be too. Good partners do.

Communication is no slacker in the importance department. Beginning with, and building from, open, real communication will make for more predictable and forecastable relationships. If your organization has a weakness, it’s okay to say that. Maybe your organization takes some time to make decisions.

Fine. Set that expectation with your partners so they know not to expect a quick turnaround, don’t hound you for a decision, and have the chance to get those needs met elsewhere.

Treating people with respect should be a given—but it isn’t. Oftentimes, we get wrapped up in our own day’s demands and forget that putting our partner’s needs first will drive us to our goals much faster.

When you respond in a timely manner, answer or find answers to the questions they ask, and aren’t late to meetings, you are communicating that you have respect for them, their time, your relationship, and yourself. Behave in ways that demonstrate trust-building, and you’ll always be proud of the work you do and your partners will too.

Ah, commitment. One of the scariest words in all of the English language. It can mean so many things and is both as strong as steel and as fragile as a daisy at the same time. Most people are challenged by commitment because they are pulled in a lot of directions and fear dropping the ball. Or they don’t have the support or buy-in from other internal departments to feel confident they can execute on a specific strategy.

It likely will take a lot of organization and tools like timelines and product roadmaps. Finding your balance so that you can comfortably honor commitments made to partners without being thrown completely off track by a snag or hiccup is critical.

If you remember these four key elements, and put your partners first, it will be your biggest win. You’ll be their favorite person to work with, you’ll always be top of mind, and you’ll be where they want to share business.
